Four ways to fit a new shape
When the target shape differs from the picture’s, something has to give:
- Fit inside — the whole picture, as large as possible within the box. Output may be smaller than the box on one side.
- Fill & crop — fills the box completely and trims the overflow equally from both sides. Only the kept part is computed.
- Pad — the whole picture centred in the box, with bars in white, black, transparent or any colour.
- Stretch — exactly the box, distorting the picture. Occasionally what a template wants.
Common sizes
Quick picks include 1080 × 1080 (square post), 1080 × 1350 (portrait post), 1080 × 1920 (story or status), 1280 × 720 (video thumbnail) and 1920 × 1080. Platform requirements change; confirm on the platform’s own help pages for anything critical. For government and exam forms, which also limit file size, confirm the exact pixel and KB limits on the official portal.
Questions
How do I keep the aspect ratio?
Leave the lock on: typing a width fills the height automatically. With the lock off, choose Fit inside or Fill & crop to avoid distortion.
My form asks for pixels and a maximum KB — can this do both?
It sets the pixels exactly and shows the file size. Lower the JPEG quality until the size is under the limit; the size updates after each scale.
What does pad with transparent do?
It centres the picture on a transparent canvas of the exact size. Save as PNG or WebP to keep the transparency; JPEG fills it with white.
Is my picture uploaded anywhere?
No. Decoding, scaling and encoding all run in this browser tab, and the scaling engine runs in a Web Worker with no network code in it. The only download the site can make for you is an AI model file, and only after you press the button that names its size — that request contains no picture.
