The models
AI detail ×4 is Real-ESRGAN general-x4v3, a compact super-resolution network trained to undo blur, noise and JPEG compression while enlarging. It works on all three colour channels and is 4.6 MB.
AI fast ×3 is ESPCN, a 234 KB sub-pixel network that enlarges brightness three times; colour is enlarged by bicubic interpolation, which the eye barely notices. It is the quick option for phones and for previews.
Both are fetched from our model file server only after you agree, checked against a SHA-256 fingerprint, and kept in your browser’s cache. ONNX Runtime executes them, served from this site.
How big pictures are handled
Large photos are cut into overlapping tiles. Each tile is run with a margin of context and only its centre is kept, so there are no visible seams. A memory guard limits the AI output to 48 megapixels on desktops and 16 on phones; if your request would exceed that, the input is reduced first and the panel tells you.
If your device’s GPU refuses the model or returns invalid numbers, the upscaler switches to WebAssembly automatically and keeps going.
Questions
Is the AI upscaler really free?
Yes — no account, no credits, no watermark. It runs on your own hardware, so there is nothing for us to meter.
Does it work offline?
After the model and runtime have been downloaded once, they are served from your browser’s cache, so AI upscaling keeps working without a connection as long as the page itself is open.
What is WebGPU and do I need it?
WebGPU lets a web page run computations on your graphics card. Recent Chrome and Edge have it; without it the upscaler uses WebAssembly on the CPU, which gives the same result more slowly.
Can I upscale transparent PNGs with AI?
Yes. The network enlarges the colour, and the transparency channel is enlarged separately with Lanczos-3 and recombined.
Is my picture uploaded anywhere?
No. Decoding, scaling and encoding all run in this browser tab, and the scaling engine runs in a Web Worker with no network code in it. The only download the site can make for you is an AI model file, and only after you press the button that names its size — that request contains no picture.
